The Book

On May 13, 1862, an enslaved harbor pilot named Robert Smalls seized a Confederate Army dispatch boat in Charleston, loaded his family and crew, and delivered it to Union lines. He became a congressman. He was removed by a gerrymandered district after the Supreme Court dismantled federal civil rights enforcement. He went back to Beaufort and bought the house where his family had been enslaved.

One hundred and sixty-four years separate Robert Smalls from Louisiana v. Callais. It is not a distance. It is a loop. Breakthrough. Backlash. Erasure. Repeat. The names change. The architecture does not.

Black Ballots, Broken Promises documents the 164-year pattern that made that moment inevitable, and the 164-year resistance that refused to accept it. From the Colfax Massacre to January 6th. From Fannie Lou Hamer to a congressional map redrawn mid-election in 2026. Told through the specific people, the specific decisions, and the specific laws that made it happen.
